Clockwork Barbecue. (1999-2000)

This commission  started out as a rectangle with a dot in the middle, scrawled on the back of an envelope, representing a conventional spit jack; the final result, which owed more to a grandfather clock than to a spit jack in terms of the mechanism, was entirely hand made apart from the bearing races upon which the various shafts turned, and could run for 30 minutes between remounts. It was self coloured/ hot waxed, with some graphited elements on the fire dogs and structure of the fireplace.

Heavy duty firebasket. (2003)

A large firebasket and fire back suspended from a one piece 50mm dia forged frame. The basket rocks forward to enable ash to be removed. As well as forged tongs and poker there is a large fork, the handle of which was forged into a long taper (with a very small exit hole) from a hollow section; this functions as a blowpipe - instead of a bellows.

Firebasket with 'winejug' andirons. (2002)

This very wide fireplace in a late 16th century manor house, was split in two in order to reduce smoking and to provide wood storage. The large rivetted canopy reduced the fireplace aperture still further and the proportions thus created allowed the fire to function well, which had not been the case previously.

Lamper head fireplace and stack. (1995 -2003)

The provision and fitting of waxed, rusted plate steel cladding to this stack was the first element of this job; some years later came the textured fire surround and the edging for the granite hearth.

Adjustable canopy. (1997)

Hood for a troublesome fireplace, which performed very inconsistently according to wind direction. The canopy can be lowered to deal with the worst conditions, and raised out of the way when conditions are more favourable. The ring handle operates a damper.

'Slumped' fire basket and back. (1999)

Heavy duty frame and back with the grate formed from one long bar and the fire back hung from the frame  as with a gong. Made for the 'Hotstuff' exhibition at the Devon Guild of Craftsmen  (c1999)

Snake grate fire basket. (1998)

Forged basket with coiled up  snake as the grate;  a 'blow fork' accompanied the basket as mult purpose tool.

Tuckenhay fireplace.  (1998 - 2009)

Firefront  and grate to the owners design.
